Tom Zé exhibition celebrates 90 years in São Paulo

Caixa Cultural in São Paulo has inaugurated a sensory and interactive exhibition titled ‘Tom Zé – 90 Anos do Inquieto Jardineiro de Sons’ to celebrate the 90th birthday of the influential Brazilian singer and composer.

Curated by Neuseli Martins, the exhibition traces the career of the Bahia-born artist, a key figure in the Tropicalismo movement. The immersive experience includes environments recreating his home, his participation in music festivals—such as his 1968 victory at the 4th Brazilian Popular Music Festival—and his period of sonic experimentation.

Visitors can interact with the exhibit by touching a replica of the ‘buzinório’, a unique instrument invented by the artist, and leaving messages for him. The display also features musical and literary references that shaped his repertoire, along with testimonials from collaborators like musician Jarbas Mariz.
