Tom Zé 90th birthday exhibition in São Paulo

Overview

To celebrate the 90th birthday of influential Brazilian singer and composer Tom Zé, Caixa Cultural in São Paulo has inaugurated an interactive exhibition titled ‘Tom Zé – 90 Anos do Inquieto Jardineiro de Sons’.

Curated by Neuseli Martins, the exhibition traces the career of the Bahia-born artist and his role as a central figure in the Tropicalismo movement. The immersive display includes environments recreating his home and his participation in music festivals, such as his 1968 victory at the 4th Brazilian Popular Music Festival.

Visitors can engage with the exhibit through sensory experiences, including a replica of the ‘buzinório’—a unique instrument involving car horns invented by the artist. The exhibition, which runs until December 13, also features musical and literary references, testimonials from collaborators like Jarbas Mariz, and highlights Zé’s long-standing connection to the city of São Paulo.
