Tonalá sinkhole opens on Avenida Malecón after heavy rains

A massive sinkhole has opened on Avenida Malecón in the Lomas del Laurel neighborhood of Tonalá, Jalisco, following heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. According to the Intermunicipal System of Potable Water and Sewerage Services (SIAPA), the collapse measures approximately 45 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 8.5 meters deep.

The sinkhole occurred near a large collector pipe that is roughly 6 meters wide and 12.5 meters high. The collapse of the concrete cover of this infrastructure caused the ground to give way, resulting in several trees falling into the depression. No injuries or vehicles caught in the sinkhole have been reported.

Authorities have closed Avenida Malecón and San Gaspar to traffic to establish a safety perimeter. SIAPA personnel are working to remove debris, while technical specialists evaluate the structural integrity of the area. Repairs are expected to take up to one month, and officials have warned residents to stay away from the delimited area due to the risk of further ground instability and water flow.
