Infrastructure-related sinkholes in Mexico

Recent infrastructure failures in Mexico have resulted in significant sinkholes in Matehuala and Tonalá.

In Matehuala, a large sinkhole opened on Jaime Nuno Street, causing the pavement to collapse between Hidalgo and Juárez streets. Authorities attributed the incident to a water leak, with local reports suggesting that aging pipes have caused multiple sinkholes in the city. The street was closed to traffic while SAPSAM personnel worked to stop the leak and stabilize the area.

In Tonalá, Jalisco, heavy rainfall led to a massive sinkhole on Avenida Malecón in the Lomas del Laurel neighborhood. The collapse, measuring approximately 45 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 8.5 meters deep, occurred near a large collector pipe. The failure of the concrete cover caused the ground to give way and several trees to fall into the depression. While no injuries or vehicle damage were reported, authorities closed Avenida Malecón and San Gaspar to traffic. SIAPA personnel are managing debris and evaluating structural integrity, with repairs estimated to take up to one month.
