Top Maoist Leader Misir Besra Arrested in Jharkhand FAST-MOVING
On July 29, 2026, security forces arrested Misir Besra, the only CPI (Maoist) Politburo member operating in Jharkhand, in a joint operation by the Jharkhand Police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Cobra battalion. The raid took place late at night in the border area of Dhanbad and Giridih districts, specifically the Barwadda police‑station zone of Maniadih.
Besra, who carried a bounty of more than Rs 1 crore, was seized together with two close associates – Mehnat (alias Mochu/Vibhishan Murmu) and Gaurav (alias Saurabh) – each wanted with a Rs 15 lakh reward. Two other individuals were detained for questioning. The operation followed intelligence obtained from a cadre who surrendered earlier that day.
Earlier on the same day, 16 Maoist cadres, including Besra’s former bodyguard Devan Murmu, surrendered in Ranchi, handing over information that helped locate Besra. Authorities say the arrest deals a major blow to the Maoist network, which has over 150 criminal cases across Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Chhattisgarh involving murder, attacks on security forces, IED blasts, extortion and levies. Besra was previously arrested in 2007 and escaped custody in 2009 after a court attack in Lakhisarai.
