Jharkhand Maoist leadership arrest

Overview

Security forces in Jharkhand captured Misir Besra, a senior Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), in a joint operation on 27 July 2026 near the Dhanbad‑Giridih border. The raid, involving Jharkhand Police, the CRPF and the elite COBRA battalion, resulted in Besra’s arrest alongside two associates, each subject to a cash bounty. Earlier that day, 16 Maoist cadres surrendered, providing intelligence that led to Besra’s location. He is wanted in more than 150 criminal cases across several states, including murders, attacks on security personnel and IED blasts.

Two days later, the Jharkhand Police reiterated the arrest, noting that Besra was seized during a vehicle check as part of Operation Daura Pahad. The bounty was reported as over ₹2.2 crore, and police recovered three AK‑47 rifles, eight magazines and 288 cartridges. Officials highlighted Besra as the only remaining top‑ranking Maoist Politbourocrat in the state, portraying his capture as a major breakthrough in the anti‑Naxal campaign that they claim has largely eradicated Maoist presence in Jharkhand.
