Topli Dol tunnel repairs restrict heavy vehicle traffic on Hemus motorway
Repairs to the Topli Dol tunnel on the Hemus motorway in Bulgaria have led to significant traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) exceeding 12 tons. To manage congestion and facilitate urgent construction work, authorities have implemented a scheduled traffic organization affecting Friday, Sunday, and Monday.
Specific restrictions include a ban on trucks heading toward Botevgrad on Friday afternoon, restrictions toward Sofia on Sunday, and morning delays on Monday to ease traffic into the capital. Alternative routes such as the Petrohan Pass and Iskar Gorge are being utilized, though the Petrohan Pass will only allow one-way HGV movement during specific weekend hours.
Regional Minister Ivan Shishkov stated that the repairs are urgent due to the poor technical condition of the tunnel equipment. To accelerate the process, construction teams are working in two shifts. Additionally, the Arabakonak Pass, a municipal road, will be prepared within 20 days to serve as an alternative route, with the state providing necessary funds for its improvement.
