Tornado Alley eastward shift increases insurance risk

A shift in the traditional Tornado Alley toward the east is increasing insurance risks as storm activity moves into more densely populated regions. While total tornado counts across the U.S. have not necessarily risen, the expansion into states like Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin has led to higher claim volumes due to increased population exposure.

Illinois recorded 220 confirmed tornadoes through July, leading all states in activity. Data from Verisk indicates that Illinois has seen its third distinct spike in five years, with average severity increasing fourfold since 2022. Wisconsin also experienced a significant spike, up 672% year-over-year, largely driven by a concentrated event in Winnebago County.

Weather experts attribute this eastward shift to a warming climate, which facilitates the transport of warm, humid air further north and east. Tory Farney, vice president of Verisk Weather Solutions, noted that the primary concern for insurers is the higher population density in these expanding storm zones.
