Toronto boy spends US$ 2,000 of family savings on Roblox gift cards
An 11-year-old boy in Toronto, Canada, spent approximately US$ 2,000 of his family's emergency savings on Roblox gift cards at a Walmart store in Ontario. The boy's parents, Hong Jin and Jason Kim, reported that the child took an envelope containing between US$ 2,000 and US$ 3,000 in cash before visiting his grandmother.
While at Walmart, the child separated from his grandmother and completed two separate transactions of US$ 1,000 each in cash to purchase the gift cards. This method allowed the transactions to bypass the store's US$ 1,000 limit per purchase.
The family attempted to return the cards for a refund, but Walmart informed them that the sales were final. Walmart Canada stated that employees followed company policy, noting that there are no age restrictions for purchasing gift cards in their stores, though issuers may have their own rules for redemption. The retailer has indicated it is in contact with the family regarding the incident.
