Torreón ranks fifth in Mexico's Smart Cities Index

Torreón has ranked fifth in Mexico's Smart Cities Index, according to a study by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The index evaluated 13 Mexican localities across five strategic dimensions: entrepreneurship, mobility, accessibility, environmental resilience, and transparency. Torreón outperformed cities such as Chihuahua, Durango, and Tijuana, specifically excelling in its startup ecosystem and environmental identity through its green infrastructure and urban parks.

In local governance, the Torreón City Council, led by Mayor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís, has approved several initiatives to support urban and social development. These include the transfer of land to the Coahuila State Government for the construction of a secondary school and the ratification of a contract with Consorcio Ecourbano Ambiental for waste management services. The new waste management model aims to modernize collection by replacing animal-drawn vehicles with motorized units, facilitating the retirement of approximately 130 equines used in informal collection.
