Overview

Torreón has been recognized as the fifth-ranked city in Mexico’s Smart Cities Index, according to a study by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The index assessed 13 localities based on entrepreneurship, mobility, accessibility, environmental resilience, and transparency. The city showed particular strength in its startup ecosystem and green infrastructure.

In conjunction with urban development goals, the municipal government under Mayor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís has implemented various infrastructure and service improvements. These include modernizing waste management by replacing animal-drawn vehicles with motorized units and completing sanitary drainage rehabilitation works across 11 neighborhoods. These drainage projects covered over 6,200 square meters of infrastructure to mitigate health hazards and network collapses, with additional large-scale collector rehabilitations currently in progress.
