Torres del Paine authorities warn of penalties after viral videos
The National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) in Magallanes has issued a warning following the viral spread of two videos recorded within Torres del Paine National Park. One video depicts a couple dancing cueca on a frozen lagoon, while another shows a tourist skiing down a snowy area.
CONAF clarified that entering rivers or lagoons within the park is strictly prohibited, even when the surface is frozen, due to the risk of the ice cracking or collapsing. Regional director John Revello stated that while the intent behind the videos may be understood, the institution urges visitors not to promote or replicate such actions, as they violate park regulations and pose significant safety risks.
Violating rules within protected areas can result in fines or even prison sentences. Regarding the skiing footage, authorities confirmed that the individual involved had obtained the necessary authorization for a technical sporting expedition, which is granted on a case-by-case basis to those with proven mountain experience.
