Torres del Paine park regulation enforcement
Overview
Authorities at Torres del Paine National Park in Chile have increased enforcement of park regulations following several incidents involving tourists.
In September, the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) issued warnings after videos went viral showing visitors dancing on a frozen lagoon and skiing in snowy areas. CONAF clarified that entering frozen water bodies is strictly prohibited due to safety risks, noting that while some activities like technical skiing may be authorized on a case-by-case basis, violating park rules can lead to fines or prison sentences.
By October, CONAF reported the expulsion of two Spanish tourists who were caught smoking in a restricted area along the Isla de los Hielos trail. Despite prior warnings regarding the use of heat sources, the individuals violated regulations, leading to their detention by Carabineros and referral to the Local Prosecutor's Office in Puerto Natales. Regional director John Revello noted these were the first expulsions of the 2026-2027 season.
