Torrevieja saltworks forecast 500,000-tonne harvest

The saltworks in Torrevieja have commenced a major harvest, with an expected yield of approximately 500,000 tonnes this season. The operator, Nueva Compañía Arrendataria de las Salinas de Torrevieja (NCAST), currently maintains an additional 350,000 tonnes in stock.

Managing engineer Joseph Pérez indicates that the production will be split roughly equally between domestic and international markets. Approximately 250,000 tonnes are destined for export, primarily to European markets for winter road de-icing, though shipments also serve the fishing industry. The remaining 250,000 tonnes are expected to meet growing demand within Spain.

Beyond road maintenance, the salt is utilized in the food and chemical industries. NCAST is currently utilizing equipment to reduce magnesium levels in its production to target industrial markets requiring high-purity salt. Logistics involve cargo vessels carrying between 6,000 and 13,000 tonnes, while smaller consignments are shipped via containers through Alicante.
