Spanish salt harvesting operations
Overview
Salt harvesting operations have commenced at different locations in Spain. At the Salines de la Trinitat in the Ebro Delta, INFOSA has launched its 2026 harvest later than usual due to weather conditions. Excessive rainfall during the previous autumn and winter, combined with high summer humidity and low wind speeds, has impacted crystallization. Consequently, production is forecasted at approximately 80,000 tonnes, which is below the typical annual range of 90,000 to 100,000 tonnes. Manager Manel Salvador noted that while the harvest will be thin, it is “not the disaster originally feared.”
In Torrevieja, the saltworks operator NCAST has begun a major harvest with an expected yield of approximately 500,000 tonnes. This production is intended to be split equally between domestic demand and international markets, specifically European markets for winter road de-icing and the fishing industry. NCAST is also utilizing equipment to reduce magnesium levels to meet high-purity industrial requirements for the food and chemical sectors.
