Tortosa Castle Galleries Restored, Parador Set for Major Renovation
Restoration work funded by the European Union and carried out by Turespaña has stabilized the 10th‑century underground galleries of the Castell de la Suda in Tortosa. The project, costing over €4 million, has opened the network of chambers, tunnels and a central 40‑metre well to guided, theatrical tours during the city’s recent Renaissance Festival, though regular public access has not yet been scheduled.
The Parador hotel occupying the castle will close temporarily from January 2027 for an 18‑month refurbishment. The €11.7 million overhaul, announced by Paradores president Raquel Sánchez, will modernise guest rooms, common areas and event spaces, requiring the hotel to shut its doors for several months during the works.
