Italy authorizes nine vaccines for 2026-2027 influenza season

The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have authorized nine vaccines for the 2026-2027 influenza season. These vaccines have been updated based on World Health Organization recommendations regarding circulating viral strains. Administration is expected to begin in early October, with priority given to high-risk groups including those over 60, pregnant women, young children, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

In regional rollouts, Tuscany has announced a dual immunization campaign starting October 1 for the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and October 7 for influenza. The RSV campaign targets children born between April 2026 and March 2027. Similarly, in Lombardy, including the Lecco province, vaccination efforts will commence in October, offering free access through general practitioners, pediatricians, and community pharmacies.

Vaccination availability and specific schedules may vary by region. Health authorities emphasize that these campaigns are essential for protecting vulnerable populations and maintaining the sustainability of the regional healthcare systems.
