Partial solar eclipse on Aug 12 2026 prompts safety alerts and event changes across Europe
A partial solar eclipse will occur on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, covering up to 94 % of the Sun in Ireland, about 88 % in the Netherlands, 85‑90 % across Germany and 90 % in parts of the Bodensee region. The event is the deepest partial eclipse in the area since 1999 and will not be repeated in Ireland until 2090.
Safety officials warn that only eclipse glasses complying with ISO 12312‑2:2015 provide adequate protection; ordinary sunglasses are unsafe. Certified glasses are sold by opticians, Specsavers, Boots, and planetariums in Ireland, as well as at MediaMarkt and the Hamburg Planetarium in Germany. In Belgium, Ice‑Watch is giving away free certified glasses at participating stores between 4 and 10 August. Searches for “eclipse glasses” on Dutch marketplace Marktplaats rose by more than 1,100 % in the weeks before the event.
The eclipse has already affected public events: Horse Racing Ireland moved the Gowran Park meeting to avoid a clash, and numerous astronomy societies in Scotland, Germany, and Spain are organising viewing parties with free glasses. The narrow path of totality will pass over Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, offering a brief total eclipse for those locations.
