Total solar eclipse to cross Europe on Aug. 12, 2026
A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, marking the first time the phenomenon is visible from the European mainland since 1999. The path of totality will stretch across the North Atlantic, passing over Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, where authorities are preparing for a surge of tourists and have announced extra security measures.
Norway will experience a deep partial eclipse, with the Moon covering a large portion of the Sun shortly before sunset. Clear western horizons are required for optimal viewing, and weather conditions may affect the experience. A subsequent eclipse is scheduled for 2 August 2027, primarily visible from North Africa and Spain.
