Total solar eclipse to darken Spain on Aug 12
A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2024, with the path of totality crossing northern Spain, northeastern Portugal, Greenland and Iceland. Observers in the narrow 8 300 km band will experience a brief darkness; in northern Spain totality will last about 20 seconds, while locations in Greenland will see a little over two minutes. The European Space Agency’s scientific director Carole Mundell noted, “A total solar eclipse is one of those rare moments in which millions of people can look at the sky together and feel wonder and curiosity.” The event is the first total eclipse visible on the Iberian Peninsula since 1905.
Anticipating large crowds, travelers are gathering in Burgos, where local markets offer regional specialties such as Burgos‑style morcilla, fresh sheep cheese, and Ebro trout, paired with Ribera del Duero wine. The guide recommends buying ingredients at the Mercado de Abastos and preparing a simple camp‑fire dinner to enjoy while awaiting the few seconds of totality.
