Touba sanitation system clogged by solid waste
Recent rainfall has exposed significant failures in the sanitation system of Touba, Senegal. Solid waste, including plastic bags and bottles, has clogged drainage networks near the Great Mosque and the Ocass market.
Members of the Ndawi Serigne Bi association have been working to clean the streets leading to Darou Khoudoss. Ahmadou Bamba Bakhoum, a spokesperson for the group, attributed the accumulation of trash to merchants who left the area in disarray following the Grand Magal religious event.
The Office national de l’assainissement du Sénégal (ONAS) confirmed that solid debris and sand have obstructed pipes, leading to water stagnation on main thoroughfares. Moustapha Rahim Wilson, the ONAS manager for Touba, noted that while the Ocass market system is functional, human behavior and the installation of certain structures have hindered effective water drainage.
