Sanitation and weather challenges in Touba, Senegal
Overview
Ahead of the Grand Magal pilgrimage in Touba, Senegal, the civil aviation and meteorology agency ANACIM issued warnings for extensive rainstorms and thunderstorms expected between 31 July and 3 August 2026. In response, local authorities mobilized health centers and sanitation agents to prepare for the influx of millions of pilgrims.
Following the event, recent rainfall has caused significant drainage failures in Touba. Solid waste, such as plastic bags and bottles, has clogged drainage networks near the Great Mosque and the Ocass market. The Office national de l’assainissement du Sénégal (ONAS) reported that debris and sand have obstructed pipes, leading to water stagnation on main roads. Local associations have begun cleaning streets, while officials noted that human behavior and certain structures have hindered effective water drainage.
