Senegal and Burkina Faso advance agricultural and water infrastructure
Senegal and Burkina Faso are advancing key agricultural and water infrastructure projects to bolster food sovereignty.
In Senegal, Agriculture Minister Cheikhou Oumar Bâ is conducting a tour of the Senegal River Valley to monitor the 2026 agricultural campaign. Key focuses include enhancing rice production, improving mechanization through the ‘Allo Tracteur’ platform, and strengthening value chains from field to processing plants. Producers in regions like Linguère have also requested better access to organic fertilizers, heavy machinery, and the implementation of agropastoral laws to resolve farmer-herder conflicts.
In Burkina Faso, Minister of State Ismaël Sombié is overseeing major hydraulic developments. Construction of the Tougouya-koko dam, with a capacity of over 15.5 million m³, has reached over 80% completion following a takeover by the National Office of Dams and Hydro-Agricultural Developments (ONBAH). This project aims to support agriculture and provide drinking water to Ouahigouya. Additionally, a new 2.2 billion FCFA sludge treatment station has been inaugurated in Ouahigouya to improve public health and environmental safety.
