Senegal and Burkina Faso agricultural and water development

Overview

Senegal and Burkina Faso are advancing infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening food sovereignty and water security.

In Senegal, officials are monitoring the 2026 agricultural campaign in the Senegal River Valley. Efforts are focused on increasing rice production, improving mechanization via the ‘Allo Tracteur’ platform, and strengthening value chains. Local producers have also called for better access to organic fertilizers, heavy machinery, and the application of agropastoral laws to mitigate farmer-herder conflicts.

In Burkina Faso, hydraulic development is a primary focus. The construction of the Tougouya-koko dam, which has a capacity exceeding 15.5 million m³, is over 80% complete. This project is intended to support agricultural needs and provide drinking water to Ouahigouya. Furthermore, a new 2.2 billion FCFA sludge treatment station has been inaugurated in Ouahigouya to enhance public health and environmental safety.
