Tour de France Grand Départ drives major economic boost for Tarragona

The Tour de France's Grand Départ passed through Tarragona on 5 July, drawing up to 60,000 spectators along the city’s streets. Local officials reported a direct economic impact of €1.5 million, with hotels and tourist apartments reaching over 90 % occupancy. Business leaders described the event as an unprecedented promotional platform for the city’s tourism brand.

Barcelona’s city council has commissioned a comprehensive study to evaluate the economic, social and territorial effects of the Grand Départ, including its stop in Tarragona. The study will measure direct, indirect and induced spending, return on investment, employment impacts, and sector‑specific changes. It will involve at least 150 visitor surveys in Tarragona and 50 surveys of local hotels, restaurants, shops and cultural venues, supplemented by administrative data on mobility, public transport, hotel occupancy and media coverage. Past editions of the race have generated €1‑1.5 million in immediate economic benefits for host cities.
