Tour de France heatwave prompts UCI to relax hydration rules

Temperatures above 40 °C swept the southern French stages of the 2026 Tour de France, forcing riders to adopt extreme cooling measures such as ice packs on the neck, cooling vests, heavy hydration and ice‑baths after each stage. Cyclists like Nico Denz described the conditions as “brutal” and highlighted the need for “a cool head” and “as much ice and water as possible.”

In response, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) issued a temporary rule change allowing teams to hand out full supply bags (musette) at points previously reserved only for water bottles, enabling cyclists to collect multiple bottles at once. The adjustment is being tested for the upcoming stages and will be reviewed based on weather, effectiveness and impact on the race.

Riders and officials debated broader changes, including possible stage shortening or earlier start times, but team director Ralph Denk cautioned against ad‑hoc decisions. The heat also raised health concerns, with riders urging better protection against dehydration and heat‑related strain.
