Tour de France stage 8 sprint clashes and heat wave prompt warnings

During stage 8 of the 2026 Tour de France, riders Biniam Girmay, Soren Wærenskjold and Olav Kooij were each warned by UCI officials for "intimidation" after a series of shoulder‑to‑shoulder battles and a barge in the final kilometres of a hot sprint finish. The chaotic sprint unfolded in soaring temperatures that have marked the first nine stages of the race.

On the following rest day, Visma‑Lease a Bike rider Matteo Jorgenson said he would not touch his bike, opting instead to stay indoors and use air‑conditioning to recover from the heat. Jorgenson highlighted the extreme conditions—temperatures above 100 °F—and the team's focus on protecting leader Jonas Vingegaard as the Tour moves toward the Alps.
