Tourism protests drive cruise restrictions in major ports

Growing anti-tourism sentiment is leading to significant operational changes for the cruise industry in several major global destinations. Residents in popular coastal areas are increasingly protesting the impact of mass tourism on their daily lives, prompting local authorities to implement restrictions.

In Barcelona, the city council and the Port of Barcelona have agreed to reduce the number of cruise terminals from seven to five by 2030, with closures and demolitions scheduled to begin in late 2026. Venice has already implemented measures to keep large cruise ships away from its historic center and recently concluded a trial period for a day-tripper access fee.

Amsterdam is also working to reduce cruise tourism by planning to cut the number of ocean cruise ships visiting the city and eventually relocating its passenger terminal. Other regions, including the Canary Islands and Mallorca, have also experienced protests regarding tourism levels.
