Tourist Death in Romania's Bucegi Mountains Climbing Accident

On July 11, 36‑year‑old tourist Antonia Mihăilescu fell more than 10 metres (about 12 m) while descending the Albișoara Brânei route in the Bucegi Mountains, Romania, after a safety‑rope anchor gave way. Mihăilescu, an experienced climber who had previously summited Kilimanjaro and visited Everest base camp, was last in a line of four climbers – three men aged 26‑51 and a qualified instructor. The rope failure caused a chain‑reaction fall that killed Mihăilescu at the scene; the three men were seriously injured but survived.

Rescue teams deployed four helicopters, including a Black Hawk, and ground crews to the remote site, conducting one of the largest mountain operations in Romania’s history. The climbers were stranded on the rocks for three hours before being extracted. A police investigation has been opened into possible manslaughter and negligent bodily harm, focusing on the instructor and the anchor installation. Rescue worker Sergiu Frusinoiu said, “We instructed them … to shine a bright light … towards the helicopter when we are above them, so we can see them.” Mihăilescu’s mother mourned, stating, “The anchor on that rope gave way and all four fell. Toni – my Antonia – died.”
