Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis death investigation focuses on drug origins
The investigation into the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has shifted focus toward the origin of anesthetic substances used during a plasmapheresis session in Kolonaki. Toxicology reports from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki indicate that Mazonakis suffered pharmaceutical poisoning, which led to severe respiratory failure. High concentrations of propofol and midazolam, along with the antidote flumazenil, were detected in his blood, alongside cocaine, lidocaine, aripiprazole, and olanzapine.
Authorities are tracing two vials of flumazenil found at the Karneadou Street practice back to a major private clinic in Athens, where a 61-year-old anesthesiologist has worked for over a decade. Investigators are examining whether these substances were obtained through unauthorized means or theft. Evidence has emerged of communications between the anesthesiologist and the practice's physician, Ioanna Gaka, approximately one week before the incident, specifically regarding the procurement of midazolam.
Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos, the doctors running the practice, have been remanded in custody on upgraded charges of homicide with possible intent by omission. Both doctors deny the charges. The investigation also includes a review of the timeline regarding the emergency call to the ambulance service, which was reportedly made approximately 50 minutes after the initial medical alert.
