Toyama Prefecture announces relief measures for heavy rain victims

Toyama Prefecture has announced a support package for residents affected by recent record-breaking heavy rains. Governor Nitta stated that the prefecture intends to request a ‘disaster designation’ from the national government once damage assessments are finalized. The relief measures include providing 50,000 to 100,000 yen in condolence payments to households with partially or fully destroyed homes. Additionally, the prefecture will offer temporary rental housing or prefectural housing to those displaced in Himi, Takaoka, Oyabe, and Imizu cities.

In Himi City, recovery efforts are underway five days after the rainfall. Damage reports indicate over 600 residential impacts, including 182 cases of above-floor flooding and 357 cases of below-floor flooding. Residents and volunteers are currently clearing mud and debris from homes, though extreme heat is complicating cleanup efforts. Some local business owners, such as a long-standing fishmonger, have expressed uncertainty regarding their ability to continue operations due to the extent of the damage.

Regarding water resources, the Toyama River and National Highway Office reported that recent rainfall has helped recover water levels in the Shogawa River basin. Storage rates at the Soyama and Komaki dams have returned to normal levels, while the Miboro Dam shows slight recovery.
