Toyota and BMW test renewable gasoline in Spain

Toyota, BMW, Lexus, and MINI are participating in a real-world road test in Spain to evaluate the performance of 100% renewable gasoline. Developed by Repsol, the fuel, known as Nexa 95, is produced from organic waste and used cooking oils.

A key feature of the project is that it requires no modifications to existing vehicle engines or fuel distribution systems. The test involves approximately 20 vehicles driving in urban and extra-urban conditions over a six-month period to collect real-world data. Bosch is supporting the initiative by using Digital Fuel Twin technology to monitor and process fuel usage and environmental impact in real time.

The initiative aligns with recent European Commission adjustments that allow for vehicles running exclusively on eligible carbon-neutral fuels (VEEF). While the fuel performs like traditional 95-octane gasoline, production has not yet reached industrial scale and current costs are slightly higher than conventional fuels.
