Repsol launches industrial-scale renewable gasoline in Spain
Overview
Repsol, BMW, Toyota, and Bosch initiated a six-month pilot project in Spain to test Nexa 95, a 100% renewable petrol produced from organic waste and used cooking oils. The experiment utilized approximately 20 vehicles from brands including Toyota, Lexus, BMW, and MINI to demonstrate that renewable fuels can be used in existing internal combustion engines and refueling infrastructures without modifications. Bosch supported the initiative using ‘Digital Fuel Twin’ technology to monitor refueling data and environmental impact in real time.
Following the testing phase, Repsol has launched Nexa 95 at an industrial scale. The fuel is now available at 30 service stations across Spanish cities, including Madrid, Tarragona, Valencia, Zaragoza, and Bilbao. Produced at the company’s petrochemical complex in Tarragona, the fuel is manufactured using domestic and industrial food waste collected via containers at Repsol stations.
Repsol reports that Nexa 95 emits 90% less CO2 than fossil-based 95-octane gasoline when considering the full life cycle of the waste. While compatible with modern cars and motorcycles without engine modifications, the company noted that classic vehicles from before the 1970s may require specific additives. Although more environmentally friendly, the product currently carries a higher price point than conventional gasoline.
