Toyota and Isuzu launch new hydrogen fuel cell route buses

Toyota Motor Corporation and Isuzu Motors Limited have launched a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) route buses. Known as the Sora by Toyota and the Erga FCEV by Isuzu, the vehicle is the result of a strategic collaboration to advance zero-emission public transportation and support decarbonization efforts.

The bus integrates Isuzu’s full-flat electric vehicle platform with Toyota’s fuel cell technology. By placing the fuel cell stack and high-pressure hydrogen tanks on the roof, the design maintains a flat cabin floor, improving accessibility for passengers using wheelchairs or strollers.

Technical improvements over the first-generation Sora include enhanced fuel efficiency and an extended cruising range of over 300 km, despite a 20% reduction in total hydrogen tank capacity. The system utilizes a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity for an electric motor, providing a combined power output of up to 299 PS and 970 Nm of torque.
