Toyota Australia announces new RAV4 GXL PHEV model

Toyota Australia has announced the expansion of its RAV4 lineup with the introduction of the GXL 2WD PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) model. This new mid-range variant is expected to go on sale in Australia during the first quarter of 2027.

The GXL 2WD PHEV features a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with a front-axle electric motor, producing a combined maximum power of 201kW (approximately 273 horsepower). Equipped with a 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery, the vehicle offers an electric-only driving range of up to 121 kilometers based on WLTP testing cycles. It supports 50kW DC fast charging and 11kW AC charging.

Standard features for this mid-range model include full LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.5-inch touchscreen. The vehicle will also include the latest Toyota Safety Sense active safety system and Connected Services.

Additionally, Toyota plans to upgrade the Drive Mode Select system for 2WD models in the fourth quarter of 2026. For AWD models, the existing Trail and Snow modes will be replaced by new ‘Rock & Dirt’ and ‘Mud & Sand’ modes to improve off-road capability.
