Toyota RAV4 global expansion and supply challenges
Overview
Toyota’s sixth-generation RAV4 continues its global rollout with an expanding mix of hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric models. In Japan, Toyota unveiled the RAV4 Adventure hybrid, priced at ¥4.5 million, utilizing a revised GA-K platform and a 2.5-litre engine producing a combined 240 PS.
Regional strategies are shifting in response to local market dynamics. In South Africa, Toyota is moving the RAV4 upmarket, with new generation pricing ranging from 770,500 to 1,043,900 rand. Communications manager Riaan Esterhuysen stated the shift is intended to protect profit margins after Chinese manufacturers like BYD, Geely, and Chery captured over 19% of the new-car market, making low-price competition difficult.
In Brazil, Toyota has introduced the new RAV4 XSE PHEV, priced at R$ 399,990. Despite maintaining the previous generation's price point, the updated model offers increased performance with 329 cv and an improved lithium-ion battery capacity of 22.7 kWh, enabling an electric-only range of 61 km. The vehicle now also supports DC fast charging.
North American offerings remain diverse, including the 2024 Hybrid SE AWD and the upcoming 2026 RAV4 GR Sport. In a head-to-head comparison by Edmunds, the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid outperformed the 2026 Hyundai Tucson in both electric range and fuel economy, achieving 58 miles of all-electric range compared to the Tucson’s 32 miles. While the Tucson offered more rear legroom, the RAV4 provided more cargo space.
However, the U.S. market is currently experiencing significant supply shortages for RAV4 hybrids. Customer wait times have extended for several months due to a transition to hybrid-only powertrains in the U.S., production retooling at the Kentucky plant, and geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East disrupting Japanese exports.
