Toyota develops new 640-hp V8 engine for GR GT supercar

Toyota is developing a new, exclusive two-seater supercar, the Toyota GR GT, designed to compete in the high-performance exotic vehicle segment. The vehicle will feature a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with a weight of approximately 1,660 kilograms, utilizing aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

Central to the vehicle is a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces a combined 640 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque when paired with a small electric motor. The engine features an innovative design with turbochargers placed between the cylinder banks to improve response times and lower the center of gravity. To manage extreme temperatures, Toyota has implemented thermal protection technology typically used in aviation.

The engine is designed to meet GT3 racing regulations, ensuring the base architecture used for road cars is compatible with competition standards. It also utilizes a dry sump lubrication system to handle high G-forces during track driving. This technological advancement may eventually be applied to other Toyota or Lexus models.
