Toyota GR GT supercar development
Overview
Toyota is advancing the development of its GR GT supercar, a vehicle designed by the Gazoo Racing division to compete with high-end manufacturers such as Ferrari and Porsche. The car is expected to enter the market by the end of 2027.
The vehicle will feature a rear-mounted, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine designed to meet GT3 racing regulations. To optimize performance, the engine architecture places turbochargers between the cylinder banks, which reduces exhaust gas travel distance and lowers the center of gravity. A small electric motor is positioned between the engine block and the eight-speed automatic transmission. While initial performance targets are set at approximately 640 to 650 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, Toyota has suggested these figures may increase.
To achieve a target weight of approximately 1,660 kilograms, the GR GT utilizes an all-aluminum chassis and a body constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber panels. The car will employ a rear-wheel-drive layout with a weight distribution of 45:55. Additionally, Toyota has implemented thermal protection technology typically used in aviation to manage extreme engine temperatures.
