Toyota files GR MR2 trademark, signaling potential new mid‑engine sports car

Toyota has filed a trademark application for “GR MR2” with the Japanese Patent Office, disclosed in a public bulletin dated 3 December 2025. The filing revives interest in the iconic MR2, Toyota’s first production mid‑engine sports car introduced in 1984, known for its central engine placement and retractable headlights.

According to a Greek‑language report, the company’s Gazoo Racing division has been developing a next‑generation prototype using a mid‑engine layout derived from the GR Yaris M Concept. The prototype is expected to feature a 2.0‑litre turbocharged G20E engine delivering over 400 horsepower and an all‑wheel‑drive system. Development work involves roughly 500 engineers and has included participation in endurance events such as the Super Taikyu 24‑hour race at Fuji Speedway. While no production schedule has been announced, the trademark filing has intensified speculation that Toyota may soon revive the MR2 nameplate.
