Toyota GR GT supercar focuses on brand image over profit
Toyota is developing the GR GT, a high-performance hybrid supercar designed primarily to enhance the brand’s sporting image and showcase new technologies rather than to generate significant direct profit. The vehicle features a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with a hybrid system, producing approximately 640 hp.
To maintain exclusivity, Toyota intends to limit production. In the United States, the initial allocation is expected to be fewer than 250 units, all of which have reportedly already been accounted for. Andrew Gilleland, Toyota’s senior vice president of automotive operations in North America, stated that the project is a “passion project” driven by Chairman Akio Toyoda’s desire for a world-class performance car. The company aims to sell these vehicles to a select group of enthusiasts rather than speculators or “flippers.”
Technical advancements for the model include an all-aluminum body structure, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic panels, and specifically designed double-wishbone suspensions. The development process involved extensive testing at circuits such as the Nürburgring and Fuji Speedway.
