Toyota launches updated Yaris hatchback and previews 2028 MR2 sports car revival
Toyota has introduced a facelift for its best‑selling Yaris compact hatchback in Japan. The update adds an electronic parking brake, a new "Mustard" paint option, and expanded interior features. Both gasoline‑powered (1.5 L three‑cylinder) and hybrid versions are offered, with the hybrid achieving up to 36 km per litre under WLTC testing. A six‑speed manual transmission is now available, and prices range from ¥1.697 million for the base gasoline model to ¥2.884 million for the top‑spec hybrid.
Separately, Toyota unveiled a concept for a mid‑engine sports car slated for a 2028 launch, reviving the MR2 (or possibly Celica) name. Developed under the direction of President Akio Toyoda, the prototype draws on technology from the GR Yaris project. The race‑spec version, dubbed Concept M, can produce about 500 hp, while the production model is expected to be lighter, more powerful than the current GR86, and feature an eight‑speed automatic with all‑wheel drive. The car will use a high‑strength steel and aluminium alloy chassis and is positioned as a modern "affordable Ferrari" for enthusiasts.
