Toyota retains global sales lead in H1 2026 despite regional declines

Toyota Motor Corporation reported global vehicle sales of 5.39 million units in the first half of 2026, keeping its position as the world’s top automaker for the seventh consecutive half‑year. Sales fell 2.8 % year‑on‑year, the first decline in two years, while rival Volkswagen AG sold 4.13 million vehicles, an 8.4 % drop.

Domestic sales in Japan rose 4.4 % to 1.1 million units, offset by a 4.5 % fall in overseas markets to 4.3 million. The biggest regional drops were in China, where sales slipped 17.1 % (about 694,670 vehicles), and the Middle East, down 21.6 % (about 218,000 vehicles). Hybrid vehicle sales grew 9.1 % to 2.71 million units and pure‑electric sales rose roughly 2.4‑fold to 193,172 units.

Toyota’s production fell 0.3 % to 5.51 million units, with a 1.2 % decline in overall output to just under 4.9 million units. The company cited weak demand in China and higher fuel prices linked to Middle‑East tensions as the main drivers of the sales slowdown.
