Toyota moves Tacoma to Texas, Tyco shuts Matamoros plant, hurting Mexico's border industry

Toyota plans to shift production of its Tacoma pickup from its Baja California plant to a Texas facility, with the move slated for completion by 2030. The Texas plant, already assembling the Tundra, will receive a $3.6 billion investment. CANACAR representative Alfonso Millán Chávez said the impact on regional logistics and the automotive sector remains uncertain, as no replacement model for the Tijuana plant has been announced.

Tyco International, a Johnson Controls subsidiary, will close its Matamoros manufacturing plant in a phased process ending in September 2027, affecting more than 1,000 workers. The union SJOIIM confirmed that employees will receive legal benefits and indemnities, and production will be transferred to other Mexican sites. The closure is linked to a global corporate reorganization and external economic pressures, adding to recent job losses in the border region.
