Toyota Tacoma shift to Texas amid nearshoring talks

Overview

In July 2026 Toyota announced a US$3.6 billion expansion of its San Antonio plant, adding a second assembly line that will raise capacity by roughly 150,000 vehicles per year and create about 2,000 U.S. jobs. The plan calls for moving roughly half of Tacoma pickup production from the Tijuana, Baja California facility to Texas, with the transition to be completed by 2030; the Tijuana line will remain operational during the four‑year shift and output will continue at the Guanajuato plant.

Mexican officials, including the Secretariat of Economy and President Claudia Sheinbaum, stressed that the move does not entail immediate closures and that dialogue will continue to protect jobs. Business groups such as CANACINTRA and Coparmex warned that the relocation signals uncertainty in the investment climate and urged greater trade‑policy certainty, while the CCE of Baja California called the announcement “confusing.”

The expansion brings Toyota’s total spending in San Antonio to $8.3 billion since 2003, doubles the plant’s size to about 2.5 million sq ft, and is supported by at least $303 million in state and local incentives. No layoffs have been reported at the Tijuana plant, though its long‑term future remains unclear.

U.S. President Donald Trump praised the move as evidence that tariffs are working, while the broader border region also feels the impact of other automotive restructurings, such as the phased closure of Tyco’s Matamoros plant.
