Toyota recalls 48,000 Tacoma models over faulty dampers

Toyota has issued a safety recall for 48,280 Tacoma TRD Off-Road models from the 2024–2025 model years due to a defect in the Bilstein dampers. The issue involves a welded flange that connects the external oil reservoir to the shock absorber body.

An untreated metal area near the flange is susceptible to corrosion, which can be exacerbated by salt spray and rock chipping. If the corrosion causes the weld to fail, the external reservoir could detach and fall off while the vehicle is in motion, creating a road hazard and potential for accidents or injury. The recall includes 43,827 non-hybrid models and 4,453 2024 Hybrid TRD Off-Road units.

Toyota plans to notify owners starting September 21, 2026, with most being contacted by early October. Authorized dealers will inspect the dampers and replace them free of charge if necessary. Owners are encouraged to verify their vehicle's status using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through Toyota or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
