Toyota shifts China strategy amid market restructuring
The Chinese automotive market is undergoing significant shifts driven by intense competition and a rapid transition to electric vehicles. Toyota is considering a strategic realignment in China, where it has traditionally operated through separate joint ventures with FAW Group in the north and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) in the south. GAC has announced plans to acquire a portion of FAW's stake in a joint venture, potentially leading to a closer integration of Toyota's Chinese operations to improve efficiency amid market overcapacity.
In a separate development highlighting the rise of domestic manufacturers, SAIC Motor's Roewe brand has launched the M7 DMH, a plug-in hybrid sedan. The vehicle features a combined range of up to 2,050 kilometers from a single tank and charge. Designed by former Rolls-Royce design chief Josef Kaban, the model integrates the ‘Doubao Deep Thinking AI Model’ and is priced competitively at approximately 89,800 yuan (roughly 11,700 euros) in the Chinese market.
