Japanese automotive strategy shifts amid Chinese EV growth
Overview
By mid-September 2026, the Chinese automotive market continued to undergo significant restructuring as domestic electric and hybrid brands gained momentum against established Japanese manufacturers. While Toyota, Nissan, and Honda faced year-on-year sales declines in August due to local price competition, Chinese brands demonstrated rapid growth.
In the luxury and hybrid segments, the Audi E7X—a SAIC and Audi collaboration—became the first luxury pure electric model to surpass 10,000 cumulative sales within 100 days of launch. The Huajing S emerged as the top-selling large PHEV SUV in August with 7,306 units sold. Additionally, Avatr entered the industrial announcement phase for its 9-series flagship SUV, which features over 1,000 horsepower and Huawei intelligent driving technology. SAIC Motor’s Roewe brand also launched the M7 DMH, a plug-in hybrid sedan with a combined range of up to 2,050 kilometers, priced at approximately 89,800 yuan.
In response to market overcapacity and intense competition, Toyota is considering a strategic realignment of its Chinese operations. The company may move toward closer integration of its separate joint ventures with FAW Group and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), following GAC’s announcement of plans to acquire a portion of FAW’s stake in a joint venture.
Globally, Chinese manufacturer XPeng reported strong performance, with overseas sales exceeding 20,000 units in the second quarter, driven by growth in markets such as France, Norway, and Israel.
