Toyota unveils new hybrid engines and multi-pathway platform

Toyota has announced a new generation of hybrid powertrains and a modular engine family designed to increase efficiency and versatility. The new lineup features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, specifically developed for electrified use. These engines will be paired with lighter, more compact electric motors and silicon carbide-based power electronics.

A key component of this strategy is the new ‘multi-pathway architecture.’ This common platform is designed to accommodate battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and full hybrid (HEV) models without compromising vehicle proportions or interior space. This approach allows Toyota to adjust powertrain mixes based on regional demand and achieve greater economies of scale.

Beyond its own fleet, Toyota intends to turn its engine technology into a significant new business segment. The company aims to sell these internal combustion and hybrid systems to other automotive manufacturers, targeting annual revenues of approximately 1.5 billion to 1.7 billion euros by 2032. The first deliveries of these new components are expected to begin as early as 2027.
