Toyota automotive technology and business strategies

Overview

Toyota has introduced a multi-pathway mobility strategy in Europe, focusing on next-generation hybrids, renewable fuels, and hydrogen fuel cells. This approach includes redesigning internal combustion engines to be smaller and more efficient for potential integration into electric vehicle platforms.

Building on these technological developments, Toyota is expanding its business model through a dual-track strategy. The company plans to sell its new generation of internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrains to external manufacturers, targeting approximately 1.5 billion to 1.7 billion euros in annual revenue from these sales by 2032. Recent updates indicate that orders for these external powertrains are expected to reach 500 million euros within the current year, with deliveries potentially commencing in 2027.

To support this transition, Toyota has announced a new modular 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine designed for electrification. Featuring both naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants, the engine aims for a 15% reduction in fuel consumption through improved thermal management and reduced friction. These engines will be paired with lighter, more compact electric motors and silicon carbide-based power electronics. This engine will be integrated into a new ‘multi-pathway platform,’ a common architecture designed to support battery-electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and hybrid electric (HEV) vehicles, allowing manufacturing to adjust powertrain mixes based on regional demand without compromising vehicle proportions or interior space.

Additionally, Toyota is advancing its software-defined vehicle capabilities through the Arene platform. Expected to be fully rolled out by 2030, the platform will serve as a unified software stack for brands including Lexus, Suzuki, and Mazda, enabling continuous over-the-air updates and reduced development costs.
