Toyota tests GR GT3 racing car at Nürburgring
Toyota is advancing the development of its GR GT3, a circuit-only racing car designed for the FIA GT3 category. Recent testing at the Nürburgring in Germany has showcased the vehicle’s aggressive aerodynamics and its 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine.
Unlike many manufacturers that adapt road cars for racing, Toyota is utilizing a “race car first” design philosophy. According to Toyota Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations Andrew Gilleland, the GR GT3 shares over 80% of its components with the GR GT road car, a significant increase compared to the 25% commonality seen in previous models like the Lexus RC F GT3.
While the road-going GR GT utilizes a hybrid system to produce approximately 640 horsepower, the GR GT3 removes the electric motors to focus on pure racing performance. The race car features specialized components including a large rear wing, enhanced cooling vents, and a race-specific transaxle gearbox to compete against rivals such as the Porsche 911 GT3 R and Ferrari 296 GT3.
